Stitch of the Month for June

June’s stitch of the month is Jacobean couching, a crewel work stitch also known as Trellis couching.

Looks easy but geometric precision is needed.

1. Make a foundation grid by laying two sets of parallel lines across the area to be filled.

2. Then work small cross stitches to tie down the thread at the points where the grid lines intersect.

Thank you to Meriel for the illustration and instructions.

May 10th: Members’ Meeting on Zoom

On Monday we welcome Karen Parry as our speaker. Karen will be taking us back in time to the year 1910 with a journey of discovery into the wonderful world of haberdashery and sewing notions. We will get a glimpse into exclusive images and drawings from Karen’s unique 1910 catalogue. It’s sure to be fascinating.

Some of you may remember Karen when she visited us 5 or 6 years’ years ago on behalf of John James Needles. For a look at what Karen is involved in now, take a look at her website: http://www.needles2pins.co.uk or facebook page http://www.facebook.com/needles2pin

Look out for the zoom meeting invitation in your inbox. Hope to see you then!

Stitch of the Month – May

May’s stitch of the month is MAGIC stitch aka Magic chainstitch or chequered chain stitch.

Worked with 2 threads of different colour threaded into the same needle.Start working as for ordinary chain stitch, but when needle is ready to be pulled through, wrap just one coloured thread around the needle,  alternating colours as you progress. If when making one coloured stitch a little of the other colour is still showing on the surface, a slight pull will make it disappear. This is what lends Magic to the name.
Looking forward to see what you talented people do with it!

Our New Blog!

Hi everyone and welcome to our new blog.

As we write, the sun is shining and springtime flowers are putting on a fine show. Let’s hope the snow stays away.

In this blog we’ll be bringing you a mix of textile news from Birmingham and further afield, together with events and dates in our programme.

Our next few months will still be ‘virtual’ but we hope to meet for a summer get together in Cotteridge when we can share what we’ve been doing. It’s been a while since we could all see each others’ fabulous work.
